Jessica Whited

Harvard Medical School

Jessica trained in Philosophy and Biology before making her way to MIT, where she earned a PhD studying how neuronal architectures are developed and maintained in the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster. Fascinated with the idea that structures need to be continually maintained after their initial development, Jessica turned to axolotls for her postdoctoral studies because they exhibit an extreme form of maintenance:  total appendage regeneration. She was determined to bring the level of molecular genetic analysis possible in Drosophila to axolotls. After developing several tools, the Whited Lab was born at Harvard Medical School, where it has grown into a team of researchers from high school students through postdoctoral scholars, all dedicated to uncovering the secrets of salamander limb regeneration.
