Beth Shapiro is a molecular biologist who studies the DNA of extinct species. Her research aims to learn how life evolves and, in particular, how changes to ecosystems that are brought about by both humans and climate can influence the distribution and diversity of life on Earth. Her award-winning 2015 book, “How to Clone a Mammoth: The Science of De-Extinction,” explores the technical, ethical, and ecological challenges faced by scientists who wish to use modern technologies to bring extinct species (or proxies thereof) back to life.
